After lightly sketching in the primary parts of the drawing, I start the main parts of the face. With Mitzi, that means the eyes and nose. The eyes were a challenge because of the reflection of the flash in the presumably black pupils. I thought about filling in the pupils, and a quick scan of images of Miniature Schnauzers on on the Internet wasn't any help. None of the dogs had big open eyes like Mitzi's. So, when in doubt, draw it like the photo!
The next step is to find the darkest parts of the drawing to establish the darkest range of the drawing. There are fewer dark parts for this drawing than I had originally thought.
