Daddy's Boots - early study and current version of drawing

Here's an early study with Charlie and boots against a plain background, the way I like to place subjects. Even with more shading, I couldn't see the subject working well. I tried studies with the shirt darker, a simple dark shaded background (though not so simple, with graphite), and with the tree and part of the house but leaving the driveway white so the boots will get great contrast. I ended up using the last option and am pleased with how it is working.

Getting close!
